Preventing Gorging and Vomiting

Puzzle Bowl

Gorging is a common problem in pets and often associated with subsequent vomiting. The causes of gorging are varied: sometimes it is food anxiety when pets feels competition for the available food, occasionally it can be associated with an underlying medical condition but often it is simply territorial behavior or gluttony. Most solutions to this problem revolve around reducing the amount of food available, serving many small portions or using some mechanism to slow down eating. The most common approach is a puzzle bowl as shown above. The obstructions in the bowl, slows eating and physically spreads the food. The main disadvantage of these bowls is that they are messy and difficult to clean. Veterinarians also recommend putting large balls such as marbles into standard food bowl to achieve the same effect, though care must be taken to use large balls to avoid accidental swallowing. Puzzle bowls do not work well for multiple pets, since you cannot control which pet gets the food and usually not all pets in your home are gorgers.
Traditional automatic food dispenser do not work well for this problem since they are designed to deliver relatively large amounts of food only a few times a day (typically 2-4). Though this helps reduce the total amount available, the portion size is not small enough to prevent gorging and vomiting behavior. Also if you have multiple pets the dispensed food is available to any pet. Of course you can hand feed your pets with small portions throughout the day, but serving a dozen small meals gets tedious, very fast.

Unlike dispensing feeders there are no left overs to be eaten by arbitrary animals since the food bowl is covered by the doors which open only in response to a wireless tag. This permits you to allow/lockout specific pets as you wish. The innovative feeder from Wireless Whiskers® offers a high tech solution to the gorging and vomiting problem. The feeder prevents it by spreading a pets daily allowance throughout the day in up to 24 portions.
Lock out the dog
Anytime your pet eats too fast, the doors close and the feeder displays “Sorry! No More Until Later”. There are 5 different programs available and you can even prevent feeding during the night if you desire. Since you can program individual allowances for different pets this is much more convenient and a lot cleaner that using a puzzle bowl. Wireless Whiskers® smart feeder works by attaching a wireless tag to each pets’ collar. Whenever a pet approaches, it is recognized by name. You decide which pets can use the feeder, how much food they get and how frequently.
